Nineveh was a city.
Not a metaphor, but a capital with armies that had come through Jonah's part of the world and left it in pieces. Everybody who first heard this story knew exactly what that name meant. They had lost people there. And the book opens with God telling a man from that region to get up, go to that city, and speak. He runs. Of course he runs. Most of us stop reading about ten verses later, when the fish shows up, because that's the part we were taught. But the fish is chapter two of four. The story isn't over. It isn't even close. What comes after is stranger, funnier, and considerably harder than anything in the children's version, and it ends in a way I've never been able to fully explain from a pulpit. This fall we're going to try. Four chapters. One prophet who has a point, one city that doesn't deserve anything, and a God who won't stay inside the lines we drew. Uncontainable Mercy.
